Tracereporters –The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG), through its Kaduna State Chapter, has expressed strong opposition to the current Tax Reform Bill under consideration by the National Assembly.
In an interview with the National Coordinator of CNG Comrade Jamilu A. Charanchi, argued that the bill lacks inclusivity and could affect various sectors and regions, especially the northern part of Nigeria.
He advised that the reforms be subjected to broader consultations with stakeholders, including civil society organizations, educational institutions, and local governments, to ensure fairness.
The key concerns raised by the CNG include the potential for increased tax burdens, particularly on lower-income groups, which could exacerbate economic inequalities.
The group warns that this could lead to discontent and social unrest, especially given the ongoing economic challenges from the subsidy removal and exchange rate unification.
They also express concerns about the effects of higher corporate taxes, suggesting that companies might pass on the costs to consumers, further worsening income inequality.
The CNG also demands a halt to any plans to defund or restructure vital agencies like TETFUND, NITDA, and NASENI, calling for stronger support to these institutions to promote national development.
They also seek clarification on ambiguous terms in the bill, such as “derivation” and “family wealth,” to avoid misinterpretations and unfair taxation.
According to CNC’s recommendations include relocating the corporate headquarters of banks and telecommunication companies to Abuja, reducing VAT to 3%, rejecting proposed increases in telecommunication tariffs, and reopening land borders to alleviate economic hardship.
The CNG insists that the government must ensure equitable distribution of resources and prioritize the well-being of all citizens.
The CNG held it’s town hall meeting at the Arewa House Auditorium on Thursday, with theme: Tax Reform Bills: A Catalyst for Economic Growth or A Burden on the People.
The event drew participants from Non Governmental Organization (NGO), Civil Society Organizations CSO, Women, Students and Critical Stakeholders.
