Tracereporters –Kaduna (Nigeria) Africa Media Development Foundation (AMDF) condemns the arrest and detention of Cameroonian journalist, Kingsley Njoka Fomunyuy by the country’s authorities.
Njoka was arrested since 15th May, at his residence in Duola, with charges of sponsoring anglophone separatists, but his lawyers and family only saw him last week.
A freelance journalist, Eyong Blaise, told AMDF in a conversation, that this is common occurrence with most journalists from the anglophone regions.
“He is accused of sponsoring anglophone separatists, for now, he is still being held at the country’s State Security Head office in the country’s capital, Yaoundé.
Njoka has not been officially charged to court, however, journalists in Cameroon have been advocating for his release.
This revelation comes a week after the announcement of the death of Samuel Wazizi, a Cameroonian journalist who died in custody from injuries sustained while in detention by the Cameroonian government.
“This is a typical situation here in Cameroon where journalists critical of the government are arrested and detained. His lawyers say his health condition does not look good”. Blaise said.
Corroborating the story, another Cameroonian journalist and press freedom advocate, Mbom Sixtus, said the government of Cameroon is trying to consolidate its lie now by preventing the truth from being told, and further stated that Njoka is in prison in Yaoundé.
Cameroonian authorities must immediately drop all allegations against Kingsley Njoka Fomunyuy and grant an unconditional release to the already abused journalist.
